Dr. Smith developed the love for Emergency Medicine while working as a ward clerk at St. Luke’s Hospital in the mission district of San Francisco during college. He completed his Emergency Medical Technician training at San Francisco City College. He then went on to receive his undergraduate degree in Physiology from San Francisco State University with the dream to eventually become an Emergency Medicine Physician. He was accepted to the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, presently known as Midwestern University. After graduating, Dr. Smith was accepted into the UC Davis Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency all while serving as the Ski Doctor at NorthStar Ski Resort in Tahoe. Attracted to NVEMG’s independent democratic model, he returned to the Bay Area in 2000 and together with his wife raised a family in Sonoma. In his tenure at Queen of the Valley Medical Center (QVMC) he has held leadership roles as Base Station Medical Director, Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Quality Assurance Chairman and Wellness Chairman. Currently he serves as NVEMG’s Director of Human Resources, ensuring NVEMG is appropriately staffed and hiring for the future. When he is not in the emergency department, Dr. Smith serves as a ringside physician for the California State Athletic Commission, skiing, surfing, and practicing martial arts.
